Zine Party: Make & Trade

Friday, January 4th at 7 PM (1 session)

A zine, short for fanzine, is a self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images produced by “fans” of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest. Join us for a fun workshop making zines with a photocopier, magazine & newspaper clippings, sharpies, and scissors. Students will learn how to collate, print, & bind 5 books (3 to keep and 2 to trade).

Want to fuel your passion for all things handmade? Sarah Matthews will show you how to take found objects to experiment in relief, monoprint, and collagraph printmaking methods.  The goal is to jump right into printmaking and play.  All participants will leave the workshop with a minimum of (5) finished art prints ready for framing.

Ideal follow-up workshop to Quick and Dirty Printmaking! Relief prints are created through carving an image into a surface, adding ink and transferring the inked image onto paper. You will learn to carve and print a unique two-layer linoleum relief print. All supplies included.

Intro to Bookbinding

Tuesdays, May 7-21, 7 PM (3 sessions)

Explore bookbinding techniques easily adapted for uses such as travel memoirs, artist's sketch books or family photos. Develop layout skills and practice three bookbinding techniques. Complete three hand-bound books.

Bookbinding 2 @ Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD

Apply introductory bookbinding skills to the creation of three books. Examine a short history and the fundamentals of: Japanese stab and Coptic stitch binding, along with flag book techniques. Identify future projects to utilize tools and skills.

Bookbinding: Special Projects

Develop advanced bookbinding skills by creating two books. Explore complex techniques that challenge skills. Identify future projects to use tools and new techniques. $70+ includes $22 fee. Prerequisites: CFT 390 Introduction to Bookbinding or permission of instructor. Note: Project for this class will be advanced bookbinding techniques designed by Hedi Kyle. Students should bring bone folder, needles and awl to class. All other supplies will be provided.

Experience the community aspect of a printmaking by experimenting with relief printmaking to create custom t-Shirts. Select from a variety of uniquely carved images to create a one-of-a kind wearable, work of art. This takes your kids’ camp project to a much higher level!

Sintra Printed Flag Book

Create a one-of-a-kind, sculptural book that is deceptively simple but has infinite possibilities. This stunning structure was created by Hedi Kyle for her book, April Diary. In this hands-on workshop, you will print 3-5 images with Sintra to use in the creation of your flag book. The first day will be focused on printing, and the second day will be focused on assembling the books.
